What NightWire is about
NightWire Candy Shorts is cyberpunk with a love story hiding in the wiring. In Olivia Carter’s city, everybody sells memories, and she’s the one who carries them. She has a single rule: never open what you carry. A dare from someone she calls Sable gets her to break it, just once. The dive drops her into a stranger’s most intimate night, and the man in that memory knows a name she has never told anyone: hers. Candy tags the series Fantasy, though the free episodes feel like science fiction, with memory chips and a megacorp. Olivia is 28 and a Candy original character, every character is a fictional adult, and the series ends in a chat with her. Her chat profile, a sex-shop assistant from Montréal, is a separate storyline from the one on screen.
Why it works (and where it doesn’t)
NightWire is a rare Candy short that has a plot, not just a premise. The hook is a mystery: whose memory is she in, and why does he know her name? The worldbuilding arrives in a few lines (memories as currency, one rule, one megacorp), and the free episodes run longer than most Candy free episodes, at 72 and 77 seconds. The cost is clarity. Names overlap, voices shift between memory and present, and I watched episode 2 twice with a notepad, which isn’t a sentence I expected to type about this catalog. If you enjoy a story that hands you questions faster than answers, that’s a feature. If you want a straight line, it’s a hurdle.
The free episodes
Episode 1 (72 seconds) is the rule, the dare and the dive, ending on Olivia’s question about how a stranger in a memory knows her name. Episode 2 (77 seconds) opens with a warning to return what she pulled off a chip and never dive it again, then moves back into the memory, where someone says the megacorp wiped them from the system a year ago. A file turns up, it can wait, and the last line is about dying to see someone again. It’s more thriller than heat so far, and it ends mid-mystery.

Verdict
NightWire spends its two and a half free minutes building a mystery instead of a scene, and it works: you’ll want to know whose memory Olivia is in. It’s a bit tangled at first, but 36 tokens finishes it, and there’s a chat with Olivia at the end. Start with episode 1, and bring a notepad if you’re the type.
